Netflix officially removes Basic – the cheapest ad-free tier


Netflix will discontinue the Basic plan in the United States and France. The cheapest ad-free plan will be scraped and users will be pushed towards the more expensive Standard, or a cheaper ad-supported tier.

The announcement came through the Q2 financial report, where the company revealed the change was first tested in the United Kingdom and Canada. Users from several countries already reported the change, which now seems to be official.

The Basic plan that costs $11.99 in the United States was removed for new users but Netflix allowed paying customers to keep it. Now, they are also pushed towards a new plan, and the the cheaper option is an ad-enabled for $6.99.

The cheapest with no ads is $15.49 (Standard) or $22.99 (Premium, which allows more supported devices to watch and download and streams in 4K, where available).

Netflix revealed two more changes in its quarterly report. It is currently testing ads that appear in the Pause screen (for ad-supported tiers only), and will stop measuring its success in new subscribers, but in growth byr egional revenue.
