EA College Football 25 is a massive hit. EA’s first college football game in over a decade is the top-selling game of the year, and has now become the best-selling sports game ever in the United States. Making its achievement even more impressive, it reached that milestone in less than five months.
For those who don’t follow sports games closely, the last major college football game developed and published by EA, NCAA Football 14, was released in 2013. Over the last decade, players wanting a college football game were forced to use mods to try and keep the aging PS3-era football sim up-to-date with the reality. Then in July, EA College Football 25 was released to massive hype and, within just a few hours, had hundreds of thousands of players. By August it was the best-selling game of the year. And now, according to newly released data, it’s one of the best-selling games of all time in the U.S.
On December 18, Mat Piscatella, executive director and video game industry advisor at Circana, posted on Bluesky that EA College Football 25 has become the all-time best-selling sports video game in U.S. history based on dollar sales.
Impressively, in less than a year, EA’s well-reviewed return to college football has sold enough copies to already land it a spot in the top 50 best-selling games in U.S. history. Piscatella didn’t specify where it currently resides.
As of December 1, EA College Football 25 is the top-selling game in 2024, beating out Helldivers 2, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. And that doesn’t even account for the copies sold as part of the (somewhat confusing) Madden 25 and College Football 25 MVP bundle.
Meanwhile, Circana data shows that the Nintendo Switch has now topped the PS2 in lifetime sales in the United States. Now, will it be able to beat the PS2’s global sales total before the Switch 2 launches and slows down the hybrid console’s momentum? We’ll find out next year.
